It is one of the nickel-iron sulfide minerals, and is an important ore of the former. It was once called iron sulfide nickelite, but this name is no longer used because violarite (chemical formula FeNi 2 S 4 ), another mineral with the same components, exists. It occurs in orthomagmatic deposits and contact metasomatic deposits (skarn-type deposits), but the former is more important in terms of depositology. Its idiomorph is a regular octahedron, but it is very rare. In Japan, most of it is microscopic, and in the Natsume Mine (closed), Oya-cho, Hyogo Prefecture (now Oya-cho, Yabu City), it coexists with pyrrhotite to form spherical aggregates, and in the Koumori Mine (closed), Oe-cho, Kyoto Prefecture (now Oe-cho, Fukuchiyama City), it coexists with chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, etc. in veins consisting only of sulfides. It is also found in the Kamaishi Mine (closed) in Iwate Prefecture, along with chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, and cubite. Its English name comes from the Irish naturalist Joseph Barclay Pentland (1797-1873).
