Born December 17, 1758 in Warren, North Carolina [Died] June 29, 1837. Warren, North Carolina. American politician. After participating in the American Revolutionary War, he served as a North Carolina senator from 1781 to 1785. In 1787 he opposed the Constitutional Convention and its draft constitution, becoming an anti-federalist, and later a Republican. He served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1891 to 1813. He was Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1801 to 1807. Although his name is attached to the Macon Act No. 2, which was enacted on May 1, 1810, he was not one of the drafters. In 1812, he supported the declaration of war against Britain. He served as a U.S. senator from 1815 to 1828. He was thoroughly opposed to the establishment of the Second Bank of the United States, protective tariffs, inland development, and the like, and also defended slavery. Macon |
