A penthouse is a rooftop floor. It can also mean a lean-to roof, a rooftop house, a roof eaves, or a canopy, but under building regulations it refers to a small part of a building that is located on the roof of a building. If the floor area of a penthouse exceeds 1/8 of the building area, it is counted as one floor, so the size of a penthouse depends on the eaves height and number of floors of the building. Examples include elevator towers (elevator machine rooms), lookout towers, and decorative towers.
