Born October 16, 1870 in Freeport, Illinois [Died] May 21, 1957. Baoli, Indiana. American political sociologist and philosopher. Studied economics and sociology at Johns Hopkins University. Later, he studied in Germany from 1894 to 1895, where he was influenced by the ideas of G. Simmel and R. Jhering. From 1895 to 1896, he served as a lecturer in sociology at the University of Chicago, where he was acquainted with J. Dewey. He was a journalist until 1910. He lived in Baoli and worked as a self-employed businessman while also working as a researcher. During this time, he was also involved in political activities as a supporter of R. La Follette in the 1924 presidential election. From 1941 to 1942, he was visiting professor of philosophy at Columbia University. His major work, The Process of Government (1908), was the first to place the behavior of social groups (such as pressure groups) at the center of political science's interest, and thus marked the departure of political science from institutional theory in later years.
