It exists naturally in many flower essential oils, such as jasmine, ylang-ylang, and acacia, either free or in the form of esters of acetic acid, benzoic acid, and cinnamic acid. It can be synthesized by hydrolysis of benzyl chloride, reduction of benzaldehyde, or the Cannizzaro reaction. Aromatic liquid. Melting point -15.3 °C, boiling point 206 °C. 1.0493. 1.5426. Soluble in many organic solvents, including alcohol and benzene, and slightly soluble in water. It is gradually oxidized by oxygen in the air to produce benzoic acid via benzaldehyde. It is used as a fragrance for cosmetics and soaps, and is widely used in the fragrance industry as a fixative for blending jasmine and other fragrances. It is also used in the preparation of injections, as it has local anesthetic and antiseptic properties. [CAS 100-51-6]

benzenemethanol．C₇H₈O(108.13)．C₆H₅CH₂OH．天然には，ジャスミン，イランイラン，アカシアなどの多くの花精油中に遊離または酢酸，安息香酸，ケイ皮酸などのエステルの形で存在している．合成するには，塩化ベンジルを加水分解するか，ベンズアルデヒドの還元やカニッツァーロ反応によってつくることができる．芳香をもつ液体．融点－15.3 ℃，沸点206 ℃．1.0493．1.5426．アルコール系およびベンゼン系の多くの有機溶媒に可溶，水に微溶．空気中の酸素で徐々に酸化され，ベンズアルデヒドを経て安息香酸を生じる．化粧品やせっけん用の香料として用いられるほか，保留剤として，ジャスミン，その他香料の調合など，香料工業において広く使われる．局所麻酔性，防腐性があるので，注射剤の調整にも利用される．[CAS 100-51-6]
