Tuberose - Tuberose

A bulbous perennial plant of the Agavaceae family (APG classification: Asparagaceae). It is said to have originated in Mexico. It has underground tubers, 30-50 cm long, and linear leaves in bundles. In autumn, it produces a flower stalk about 1 meter long and a spike-like inflorescence. The milky white flowers have six petals, two on each node, and bloom from the bottom up. They start to bloom in the evening, and the flowers are fragrant, so they are called Gekkakou (Moon Fragrance). They are also sometimes called Ye Lai Xiang (Evening Fragrance) in Chinese, but the plant with the Chinese name Ye Lai Xiang is a vine plant of the Asclepiadaceae family (APG classification: Apocynaceae) that grows wild from southern China to India, so the name is confusing. They are somewhat sensitive to cold, so if you plant them in spring after looking for bulbs grown in warm areas, you will see flowers in autumn. They are generally grown in greenhouses as cut flowers and are available from late summer to early autumn.

リュウゼツラン科（APG分類：キジカクシ科）の球根性多年草。原産地はメキシコとされる。地下に塊茎があり、長さ30～50センチメートル、線形の葉を束生する。秋に1メートルほどの花茎を立て、穂状花序をつける。花は乳白色の6弁花で各節に2個ずつつき、下方から順に上へ咲き上る。夕刻から咲き始め、花に香りがあるのでゲッカコウ（月下香）の名がある。また中国語読みで、イエライシャン（夜来香）の名でよばれることもあるが、中国名で夜来香と記される植物は中国南部からインドにかけて自生するガガイモ科（APG分類：キョウチクトウ科）のつる草Telosma cordata Merrであり、呼び名が混乱している。寒さにはやや弱く、暖地で育てた球根を求めて春植えすると、秋には花がみられる。一般には温室栽培の切り花用とされ、晩夏から初秋にかけて出回る。
