Umekoji family

…Aristocrats descended from the Northern branch of the Fujiwara clan. In medieval documents, it is also written as "Kuwanshuushi." Its founder was Fujiwara Takafuji, Minister of the Interior, Emperor Daigo's maternal grandfather. Takafuji's son, Minister of the Right, Sadakata, built Kanshu-ji Temple in Yamashina, Kyoto, as the clan's family temple, and the clan's highest ranking official was the head of the family, so the temple name became the general name for the clan. During the Insei period, the clan prospered rapidly after Tamefusa and Akitaka, father and son, served as trusted vassals of the Shirakawa Retired Emperor. They were appointed as Daijokan (Great Council of State) officials for successive generations, but also served the retired emperor and regents, and handled practical matters within the Imperial Court and the household, and were known as a Benkan family or a famous family. …

…藤原氏北家から出た公家。中世の文献には〈くわんしゆし〉とも表記する。醍醐天皇の外祖父内大臣藤原高藤を始祖とする。高藤の男右大臣定方の建てた京都山科の勧修寺（かんしゆうじ）を一門の氏寺とし，一門中官位第一の者を長者として結束したので，この寺号が一門の総称となった。院政時代に入って，為房･顕隆父子が白河院近臣として活躍してから急速に繁栄し，代々太政官の弁官に任ぜられる一方，上皇や摂関に仕えて院中，家中の実務をとり，弁官家とか名家とよばれた。…
