A state in the northeastern United States. Abbreviated as Pa. or PA. Mountains and plateaus such as the Allegheny and Appalachian regions occupy the center of the state, while the southeastern part is a coastal plain. It is one of the leading mining and manufacturing states in the United States, producing almost all of the anthracite coal in the United States, and the third largest amount of bituminous coal. It also has abundant oil and natural gas. It is number one in the steel industry in the United States, with metal, machinery, chemical, cement, food processing, and textile industries taking place. Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Bethlehem are its centers. Its agricultural industries include horticulture, dairy farming, fruit farming, and poultry farming. The state capital is Harrisburg. The largest city is Philadelphia. The first Swedes settled in 1643. After passing through Dutch territory, Quaker William Penn gained sovereignty in 1681. It is one of the 13 independent states. It joined the Union in 1787. It has many historical sites, such as Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was read, and the battlefield where the Battle of Gettysburg took place.
