Japanese: わらぐつ(藁沓∥藁靴) - わらぐつ

Woven straw shoes for use in the snow. Also called snow boots, there are waragutsu with claw hooks, short-style jinbei and genbei, and long-style fukagutsu. Waragutsu and genbei were used for walking in shallow snow, jinbei with shin guards placed on the shins for working in the snow, and fukagutsu were used with snowshoes for clearing snow from roofs and treading on it. There are straw boots in northern China as well, but there are more varieties in Japan. Various types of straw boots were made based on the weaving method of zori and waraji (straw sandals), with the addition of claw hooks, heel guards, shin guards, etc.

雪中で用いるわらで編んだくつ。雪ぐつともいい，爪掛つきのワラグツ，短ぐつ式のジンベイやゲンベイ，長ぐつ式のフカグツなどがある。ワラグツやゲンベイは浅い雪のときの歩行用に，ジンベイは脛巾（はばき）を脛に当てて雪中の労働に，フカグツは屋根の雪降ろしや雪踏みにかんじきとともに用いられた。中国北部にもわらぐつはあるが，日本のほうが種類が多い。草履やわらじ(草鞋)の編み方を基本にして爪掛，踵掛（あくとかけ）(当)，脛巾などを足して各種のわらぐつがつくられた。
