Duke of Rivas

Spanish poet and playwright. His real name was Ángel de Seavedra. His early works showed a tendency towards neoclassicism, but he was influenced by Romanticism during his time in exile in France, England, and Italy. He advocated radical liberalism and actively participated in politics, but after returning from exile he became more moderate. He created a Romantic whirlwind in Spain with his work Don Álvaro, or the Forces of Destiny (1835), known as the Hernani of Spanish drama. The play depicts the tragic love story between Don Álvaro, a bullfighter of Inca descent, and Doña Leonor, the daughter of a marquis, due to their different social status. Although the plot is unrealistic, it is full of typical elements of Romanticism.

スペインの詩人，劇作家。本名Ángel de Seavedra。初期の作品には新古典主義的傾向がみられたが，フランス，イギリス，イタリアで亡命生活を送るうち，ロマン主義の洗礼を受けた。過激な自由主義を唱え，政治にも積極的に参加したが，亡命から帰国後，穏健さが加わる。スペイン演劇の《エルナニ》といわれる《ドン･アルバロもしくは宿命の力》(1835)でスペインにロマン主義旋風を巻き起こす。インカの子孫である闘牛士ドン･アルバロと侯爵の令嬢ドニャ･レオノールとの身分違いによる悲恋を描いたもので，プロットは現実離れしているが，ロマン主義の典型的要素がふんだんに盛り込まれている。
