An old Swedish mining term. A silicate gangue associated with iron or sulfide deposits, or a contact rock composed of lime-rich silicate minerals. Calcium silicate minerals include garnet, pyroxene, and amphibole. Generally, it is a rock formed by metasomatism of limestone in a vein or in a contact metamorphic zone of igneous rocks. Goldschmidt extended it to all Ca-Fe-silicate rocks formed along the contact of limestone [Goldschmidt : 1911]. In ancient times, it was used especially for metasomatized deposits of limestone and dolomite, but later it came to be used for those formed by similar contact metamorphism in younger times [Goldschmidt : 1911, Eskola : 1914]. Skarns are formed by the addition or removal of various elements such as CaO, MgO, SiO 2 , FeO, and Fe 2 O 3 , and have various mineral assemblages. When it contains a particularly dominant mineral species it is called andradite skarn by adding the prefix, skarn from Swedish means filth, rubbish, refuse, etc.SkarnSource: Asakura Publishing Dictionary of Petrology Information |
