Skarn

Skarn
An old Swedish mining term. A silicate gangue associated with iron or sulfide deposits, or a contact rock composed of lime-rich silicate minerals. Calcium silicate minerals include garnet, pyroxene, and amphibole. Generally, it is a rock formed by metasomatism of limestone in a vein or in a contact metamorphic zone of igneous rocks. Goldschmidt extended it to all Ca-Fe-silicate rocks formed along the contact of limestone [Goldschmidt : 1911]. In ancient times, it was used especially for metasomatized deposits of limestone and dolomite, but later it came to be used for those formed by similar contact metamorphism in younger times [Goldschmidt : 1911, Eskola : 1914]. Skarns are formed by the addition or removal of various elements such as CaO, MgO, SiO 2 , FeO, and Fe 2 O 3 , and have various mineral assemblages. When it contains a particularly dominant mineral species it is called andradite skarn by adding the prefix, skarn from Swedish means filth, rubbish, refuse, etc.

Skarn

It is a contact metamorphic rock found in aureoles around intrusive igneous bodies or in areas of high-grade regional metamorphism. The ore bodies associated with skarn rocks are usually small and irregularly shaped and irregularly distributed, and the ore and gangue mineral assemblages are unique. Typical ores include magnetite, ilmenite, hematite, corundum, and spinel, along with zinc, lead, tin, and tungsten. Gangue minerals are mainly high-temperature silicate minerals, such as grossularite, andradite, hedenbergite, tremolite, olivine, diopside, and albite, associated with quartz and carbonate minerals [Kemp: 1907, Bateman: 1952].

[Kemp : 1907, Bateman : 1952].
