It is said that Emperor Sanjo's consort Hara (the daughter of Fujiwara Michitaka) lived here, and in the Tale of Genji, it is the residence of Hikaru Genji's mother, Kiritsubo no Koi. It is in the northeast corner of the Imperial Palace, and is the furthest from Seiryoden, where the emperor lived, so it is depicted that the other ladies-in-waiting of the consort were very mean to her when she went to Seiryoden.
