Japanese: ベローナ - べろーな(英語表記)Verona
Verona - Verona (English spelling)

The capital of the province of Verona in the Veneto region in northeastern Italy. Population 243,474 (2001 census estimate). Located on the Adige River at the southern foot of the Lessini Mountains. A key transportation hub connecting major cities in northern Italy with Austria via the Brenner Pass in the Alps. Known as a distribution center for agricultural products, the city hosts an international agricultural fair every year. Industrial activities such as steel, machinery, printing, food, and chemicals are also active. It is also famous as the setting for Romeo and Juliet. Many tourists visit the city, which is home to the ancient Roman amphitheater (from the 1st century BC, where an opera is performed every summer), the Church of San Zeno (12th to 14th centuries), and the 14th century fortress Castelvecchio. The city was the site of the Verona Congress held in 1822. The city was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2000 (World Cultural Heritage).
