A general term for the genus Veronica (Scrophulariaceae). There are about 300 species of annual or perennial plants distributed in the Northern Hemisphere. They include the common perennial plant, which has become a common weed as an introduced plant, and the wild plant, Veronica stag beetle. The leaves are simple and opposite, but occasionally alternate. The flowers are solitary or form racemes. Species such as V. subsessilis, V. longifolia, and V. spicata, which have racemes of purple-blue flowers, are used for cut flowers and in flower beds. There are also hybrids, and white and pink varieties can be seen. Most are strong and easy to grow. They grow best in soil rich in humus, and in sunny locations.
