...This 1972 film by director Werner Herzog (1942- ) is said to be the monument of the New German Cinema that emerged in the late 1960s and 1970s. In "The Feast of the Dwarfs" (1970) and "The Enigmas of Kaspar Hauser" (1974), Herzog depicted the resistance and madness of alienated humans, in "Mirage" (1968) and "Heart of Glass" (1976), he depicted the bizarre primitive landscapes of the earth filled with premonitions of the end of the world, and in "Proof of Life" (1967) and "Strozzek's Wonderful Voyage" (1977), he depicted despair over Western civilization and the collapse of humanity. In this film, which was shot entirely on location in the Amazon basin, surrounded by virgin forest, Herzog depicts the extreme physical and mental conditions of humans who rush forward as if fascinated by an unknown catastrophe. ...
