1873‐1922 Mexican revolutionary journalist and anarchist. Born in the southern state of Oaxaca, he studied law in Mexico City. As a student, he was imprisoned for participating in an anti-government demonstration in 1892. In 1900, he published the newspaper Regeneración, writing critically of the Díaz dictatorship. In 1904, he fled to the United States, and in 1906, he founded the Mexican Liberal Party in St. Louis, publishing a platform that presented concrete proposals for improving working conditions for workers, which influenced the Mexican Revolution. He later became interested in anarchism, and in 1918, he was arrested for violating the Counterespionage Act, and died in prison in Kansas without ever returning to his homeland.
