Takeda City is located in the southern part of Oita Prefecture, occupying the Takeda Basin and the surrounding mountainous areas. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The central city developed as a castle town around Oka Castle. It is the economic and transportation center of the basin, and is served by the Toyohashi Main Line, Route 57, and Route 442. The surrounding area produces rice, vegetables, shiitake mushrooms, kabosu citrus, saffron, and livestock such as beef cattle. It is home to the ruins of Oka Castle, the model for Taki Rentaro's "Ruined Castle over the Moon," the former home of Tanomura Takeda, Takeda Manor (both historic sites), and the Taki Rentaro Memorial Museum. In 2005, the Kuju Bogatsuru-Tadewara Marshland was registered as a Ramsar site. In April 2005, Ogimachi, Kujumachi, and Naoirimachi in Naoiri County were incorporated into the city. It has an area of 477.53 ^km2 and a population of 24,423 (2010).

大分県南部，竹田盆地と周辺山地を占める市。1954年市制。中心市街は岡城の城下町として発達。盆地の経済，交通の中心地で豊肥本線，国道57号線，442号線が通じる。周辺では米，野菜，シイタケ，カボス，サフランなどを産し，肉牛飼育などの畜産も行われる。滝廉太郎の《荒城の月》のモデルという岡城跡，田能村竹田の旧宅竹田荘（ともに史跡），滝廉太郎記念館などがある。2005年にくじゅう坊ガツル・タデ原湿原がラムサール条約登録湿地となる。2005年４月直入郡荻町，久住町，直入町を編入。477.53km²。２万4423人（2010）。
