Born November 8, 1838 in Albany, New York. Died October 24, 1909. American jurist near Albany, New York. After serving as a judge on the New York State Supreme Court (1883-86) and the New York State Court of Appeals (1886-95), he was appointed to the United States Supreme Court by President G. Cleveland in 1896. An ardent Democrat, he participated in famous decisions such as Rochester v. New York, and was respected by his fellow judges and lawyers for his diligence and deep scholarship.
