Verviers - Vervie (English spelling)

An industrial city in the province of Liège in eastern Belgium. Population 53,020 (2002). Located in the valley of the Besdre River, a tributary of the Meuse (Mause) River. After the Flemish wool industry declined due to competition with England at the end of the 14th century, the wool industry was revived in the 16th century, centered around Verbier, using the water of Besdre and the surrounding sheep farming industry, and supported by the technology of the Liège industrial region, it became Belgium's number one wool industrial city. However, due to dependence on imported raw materials, outdated equipment, and the advance of developing countries, the wool industry has been in decline since the 1970s, with an increasing number of industries closing down, and it almost disappeared by the 1980s.

ベルギー東部、リエージュ州の工業都市。人口5万3020（2002）。ムーズ（マース）川支流ベズドル川の河谷に位置する。14世紀末にフランドルの羊毛工業がイギリスとの競争で衰退した後、16世紀にベズドルの水、周辺の牧羊業をもとにベルビエを中心に羊毛工業が再生し、リエージュ工業地域の技術に支えられベルギー第一の羊毛工業都市となった。しかし、輸入原料への依存、設備の旧式化、開発途上国の進出などで羊毛工業は1970年代以降斜陽化、閉鎖工業が増え、1980年代にほぼ消滅した。
