A former town in Nishiibaraki County, western Ibaraki Prefecture. The city developed in a small basin through which the Sakuragawa River flows, and the Mito Line runs through it. The town produces rice, wheat, and tobacco leaves. There are also stone, machinery, and electrical factories. The banks of the Sakuragawa River (a scenic spot) are famous for their cherry blossoms. In October 2005, the town merged with Makabe Town and Yamato Village in Makabe County to become Sakuragawa City. Area: 87.16 km2 . Population: 22,796 (2003). 茨城県西部，西茨城郡の旧町。桜川が流れる小盆地に市街が発達，水戸線が通じる。米，麦，葉タバコを産する。石材，機械，電気などの工場もある。桜川（名勝）の堤は桜の名所。2005年10月，真壁郡真壁町，大和村と合併し市制，桜川市となる。87.16km2。２万2796人（2003）。
