A former town in Nishiibaraki County, western Ibaraki Prefecture. The city developed in a small basin through which the Sakuragawa River flows, and the Mito Line runs through it. The town produces rice, wheat, and tobacco leaves. There are also stone, machinery, and electrical factories. The banks of the Sakuragawa River (a scenic spot) are famous for their cherry blossoms. In October 2005, the town merged with Makabe Town and Yamato Village in Makabe County to become Sakuragawa City. Area: 87.16 km2 . Population: 22,796 (2003).
