Born in 1638, Saga [Died] October 1, 1707 (4th year of the Hoei period). Nagasaki School painter and metalworker in the early Edo period. His common surname was Kawamura, and his given name was Kizaemon. His pen names included Wakashiba and Shiyou. His legal name was Dokou. He went to Nagasaki to study under Itzen, where he painted realistic flower and bird paintings and portraits, and built the foundations of the Nagasaki School of Chinese painting. He also excelled in metalwork for incense burners, vases, and sword decorations, and gained popularity for his Wakashiba tsuba, which feature intricately inlaid gold patterns of people, landscapes, dragons, tigers, lions, and other figures. His major works include "Dharma," "Portrait of the Taoist Chogen," and "Picture of Hotei Crossing the River."
