The Philharmonic Orchestra is Germany's leading orchestra, and one of the world's leading. In 1882, 54 musicians from the Bilse-Kapelle, an orchestra formed by Benjamin Bilse (1816-1902), formed the Philharmonic Orchestra, which became the basis of the orchestra we know today. Later, Joachim and Bülow were succeeded by A. Nikisch, who in 1895 became the permanent conductor, and raised the orchestra to a world-class level. In 1922, W. Furtwängler took over the position, establishing the orchestra's current reputation. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
