A former town in Aisai County on the Nobi Plain in western Aichi Prefecture. The main settlement, Saya, is located along the Saya Road, a side road of the Tokaido Highway in the early modern period, and prospered as a ferry port on the Saya River to Kuwana. The town produces rice and vegetables, and also has textile and machinery industries. The town is connected by the Meitetsu Bisai Line. In April 2005, it merged with Saori Town, Tatsuta Village, and Hachikai Village in Aisai County to become a city. Area: 18.65 km2 . Population: 30,347 (2003). 愛知県西部,濃尾平野上の海部(あま)郡の旧町。主集落佐屋は近世東海道の脇往還佐屋路に沿い,桑名へ至る佐屋川舟運の渡津として栄えた。米,野菜を産し,繊維,機械工業も行われる。名鉄尾西(びさい)線が通じる。2005年4月海部郡佐織町,立田村,八開村と合併し市制,愛西市となる。18.65km2。3万347人(2003)。
