This marine fish belongs to the family Gobiidae of the order Perciformes of the class Osteichthyes. It is found from central Honshu southwards and in southern Korea. Both juveniles and adults live near the shoreline of rocky and sandy coasts. It is also commonly seen in small tide pools. Its body is grey-black and its mouth is very large. It reaches a length of 7cm and matures one year after birth. The spawning season in Chiba Prefecture is from January to May. The eggs are laid in a layered mass under stones in shallow waters. The larvae lead a pelagic life before moving on to a benthic lifestyle. After living benthic, they are omnivorous, feeding on worms, small snails, small crustaceans, green algae, etc., and are voracious eaters.
