[Died] June 30, 1984. Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. American female playwright. Studied at Columbia University and other institutions, she gained recognition for her work The Children's Hour (1934), which tells the story of a wealthy young girl and her female teacher. Her other works include The Little Foxes (1939), which depicts the conflicts that arise from the materialistic desires of a family in the American South, Watch on the Rhine (1941), which criticizes Nazism, and The Autumn Garden (1951), which depicts the decadence of the leisure class.

German classical scholar. Professor at the University of Leipzig. He emphasized the importance of linguistic methods in classical philology. His main works include De Emendanda Ratione Graecae Grammaticae (1801) (On the Correct Method of Greek Grammar).
