Year of death: 1881 (Meiji 14?) Year of birth: 1821 A Nishijin weaver of the Meiji period. In 1872, he was selected as a textile trainee in Kyoto Prefecture, and travelled to France with Yoshida Chushichi and Sakura Tsuneshichi, where he mastered weaving techniques after much difficulty in Lyon. He returned to Japan the following year and introduced Western-style looms such as jacquard and batten looms to Japan. In 1895, he became a professor at the Kyoto Prefecture Weaving Factory (later renamed Oridono), where he taught and popularised new techniques. His contributions to not only the Nishijin weaving industry but also to the modernisation of Japanese textile weaving techniques were great. In 1891, he began working at the factory of Date Yasuke, who was a member of the Imperial Household Artist Association and who used traditional techniques to incorporate classical Japanese designs into textiles. <References> Otsuki Takashi, History of the Nishijin Textile Industry Guild (Takanori Matsumoto) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
