A Nishijin weaver of the Meiji period. In 1872, he was selected as a textile trainee in Kyoto Prefecture, and travelled to France with Yoshida Chushichi and Sakura Tsuneshichi, where he mastered weaving techniques after much difficulty in Lyon. He returned to Japan the following year and introduced Western-style looms such as jacquard and batten looms to Japan. In 1895, he became a professor at the Kyoto Prefecture Weaving Factory (later renamed Oridono), where he taught and popularised new techniques. His contributions to not only the Nishijin weaving industry but also to the modernisation of Japanese textile weaving techniques were great. In 1891, he began working at the factory of Date Yasuke, who was a member of the Imperial Household Artist Association and who used traditional techniques to incorporate classical Japanese designs into textiles. <References> Otsuki Takashi, History of the Nishijin Textile Industry Guild

明治期の西陣織匠。明治5(1872)年京都府織物伝習生に選ばれ,吉田忠七,佐倉常七と渡仏,リヨンで困難の末製織法を習得した。翌年帰国し,ジャカードやバッタンなどの洋式織機を日本に導入した。8年,京都府織工場(のち織殿と改称)の教授となり,新技術の指導と普及に当たった。西陣機業界のみならず日本の織物製織法の近代化に果たした彼の貢献は大きい。14年,日本の古典的な意匠を伝統的な技で織物に生かし,帝室技芸員にもなった伊達弥助の工場に就業した。<参考文献>大槻喬『西陣織物同業組合史』
