A Celtic tribe that lived in the Swiss region. In Latin, they were called the Helvetii. As the Germanic tribes advanced southward, the Celtic tribes of southern Germany migrated to Switzerland, and among them, the Helvetii, settled in the area between the Rhine, the Jura Mountains, and the Alps at the end of the 2nd century BC. They then tried to emigrate to France in search of a more peaceful land, but were defeated by the Roman army led by Caesar in the Battle of Bibracte in 58 BC, and were forced to return to Switzerland to be used as a shield against Germanic invasions.
