Belvedere (English spelling)

Japanese: ベルベデーレ（英語表記）belvedere

Architectural term. In Italian, it means a beautiful view, and refers to a covered balcony or watchtower on the roof of a palace or mansion for a good view (→ loggia). It can also refer to a small tower built at a high point in a garden or park with a good view. Gazebo and mirador are similar words. The Belvedere in the Vatican Palace in Rome was built on a high point at the edge of the grounds with a good view as a detached building of the Papal Palace, but was later incorporated into the main palace as a gallery designed by D. Bramante. The courtyard created at that time is called the Belvedere Courtyard.

建築用語。イタリア語で美しい見晴らしを意味し，宮殿や邸宅の屋上に設けられる見晴らしのための屋根つきのバルコニーや望楼などをいう (→ロッジア ) 。庭園や公園の眺望のよい高所につくる小塔をさすこともある。ガゼボやミラドールは同類語。ローマのバチカン宮殿内のベルベデーレは，法王宮の離れとして眺望のよい敷地の端部の高みに建てられたが，のちに D.ブラマンテ設計のギャラリーによって宮殿本体に合体されたもの。この際にできた中庭はベルベデーレの中庭と呼ばれている。
