There are several newspapers with the same name. (1) A bi-daily newspaper founded on December 15, 1878 (Meiji 11) by Fukuoka drug dealer Fujii Magojiro. It was a simple, small newspaper with furigana. It was published until the 105th issue on August 22, 1879. On the 25th, it changed its title to Tsukushi Shinpo and began publishing editorials. In April of the following year, it changed its title to Fukuoka Nichi Nichi Shimbun and became a daily newspaper. It is the predecessor of the current Nishinippon Shimbun. (2) On April 1, 1887 (Meiji 20), Toru Hoshi renamed the newspaper "Tomoshibi Shimbun" (which changed its title from "Jiyu no tomoshibi" in January 1886). It was a small newspaper affiliated with the Liberal Party, but due to frequent suspensions of publication and Hoshi being ordered to leave the imperial capital under the Security Ordinance, Ryohei Murayama bought it, revamped the paper, and changed its title to "Tokyo Asahi Shimbun" on July 10, 1888, which is today's "Asahi Shimbun." (3) A newspaper affiliated with the Liberal Party founded on November 15, 1893 (Meiji 26) by Iwataro Ueno and Yasugoro Endo. It changed its title to "Tokyo Shimbun" in 1895 and "Jinmin" in 1897. It became affiliated with the Seiyukai Party. [Akihiko Sunohara] [Reference items] | |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
