Also known as white beech (illustration). A deciduous tall tree of the Fagaceae family, it is representative of Japan's temperate deciduous forests. Therefore, this forest zone is also called the beech zone. It reaches a height of 25 m and a diameter of 1.5 m, with a relatively straight trunk. The bark is smooth and grayish white, with lichens creating various patterns. The leaves grow alternately on the brown current-year branches, are oval or diamond-oval, and 4 to 9 cm long. The edges are wavy, and there are a few long hairs remaining on the veins. It blooms together with the new branches in May, and the male inflorescences hang on long stalks from the lower axils of the new branches, while the female inflorescences grow from the axils in the middle of the branches.
