A city from the Sassanid Persian period in Khuzestan Province in southwestern Iran. It was founded in 260 by Shapur I as a colony of Roman prisoners of war. After that, people continued to come from the west, Greek learning was introduced, and medical schools and hospitals were established. Indian medicine was also introduced, and it became a base for cultural exchange between the East and the West. It was occupied by the Muslims in 641 and called Jundishapur, but it made an important contribution to the establishment of Arabic science through its research facilities and translations of Persian and Syriac documents into Arabic.
