Born: April 10, 1794
An American naval officer in the late Edo period. Born in Newport, Massachusetts, as the third son of Christopher, a naval captain, and Sarah. He was commissioned as a naval officer cadet in January 1809, promoted to lieutenant in July 1813, lieutenant commander in March 1826, and promoted to colonel, the highest rank in the navy, in February 1837. In January 1833, he became shipyard manager at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York, and in 1841 became its commander. During his time at the navy, he contributed to the construction of three steamships, including the Mississippi and Missouri, improved lighthouse facilities, and promoted officer education, and was praised as the father of the steam navy. He achieved military success by becoming commander-in-chief of the African Fleet in April 1843, vice commander of the Gulf Fleet in May 1846, and commander-in-chief in March 1847. In March 1852, he became commander-in-chief of the East India Squadron, and arrived in Uraga on June 3, 1853 (July 8, 1853) to negotiate with Japan, and handed over a letter of sovereignty from American President Fillmore at Kurihama. He returned to Japan in February of the following year (1854), and the Treaty of Peace and Amity between the United States and Japan was signed on March 3 (March 31). 幕末のアメリカの海軍軍人。マサチューセッツ州ニューポートに海軍大佐の父クリストファーと母セーラの3男として生まれる。1809年1月海軍士官候補生の辞令を受け,13年7月海軍中尉,26年3月中佐を経て,37年2月,海軍の最高地位である大佐に昇進した。33年1月ニューヨークのブルックリン海軍工廠の造船場長,41年には同司令官になる。工廠在勤中,ミシシッピ号,ミズーリ号など蒸気船3隻の建造,灯台施設の改良,士官教育の振興に尽くし蒸気海軍の父としてたたえられた。43年4月アフリカ艦隊司令長官,46年5月メキシコ湾艦隊副司令官,47年3月同司令長官に就き軍功を現した。52年3月,東インド艦隊司令長官に就き,嘉永6年6月3日(1853年7月8日),対日交渉のために浦賀に来航,久里浜でアメリカ大統領フィルモアからの国書を手渡した。翌安政1(1854)年2月再び来日し,3月3日(3月31日)に日米和親条約を締結。57年12月退役した。<著作>『ペリー日本遠征日記』(金井圓訳)<参考文献>S.E.Morison《Old Bruin》
