belt
belt

A clothing term. A string-like or belt-like garment worn around the waistline and hips. It is almost synonymous with band, but belts are limited to those worn around the torso or hips. They are decorative as well as practical for carrying things like swords or small pouches. They can be tied at both ends or fastened with buckles, clasps, buttons, or hooks. They can be made from materials such as leather, cloth, braided cord, ribbon, synthetic resin, or metal chain. They can also be made from the same fabric as the garment. In dressmaking, it refers to the separately cut part with a core that holds skirts or trousers firmly around the waist.
