He was one of the masterminds of the July 20, 1944 assassination attempt on Hitler, which was led by members of the German Army's upper echelons. At the time, he was Chief of Staff to the Supreme Commander of the Reserve Army and an Army Colonel. He was born into a distinguished family that served the royal families of Württemberg and Bavaria, and his mother was the grandson of Prussian General Gneisenau. Although he was raised in an environment of monarchical conservatism and Catholicism, he was one of the most open-minded of the landed aristocracy who joined the anti-Hitler movement, and he also had close ties to the socialist group.
