A village in Aso County in the northeastern part of Kumamoto Prefecture. Population 4,567 (1995). The village lies on the slopes of Mt. Eboshi on the Aso Central Crater Cone in the north, from Senrigahama to the southern part of the crater plaza and the central part of Nango Valley, with the Shirakawa River flowing northwest along its southern edge. The Minamiaso Railway Line and National Route 325 run almost parallel to the Shirakawa River. Settlements are scattered along the national route, with the centre being Yoshida-shinmachi, north of Aso Shirakawa Station. Rice is the main crop, and tobacco and beef cattle are cultivated. 熊本県北東部,阿蘇郡の村。人口4567(1995)。村域は北部の阿蘇中央火口丘の烏帽子(えぼし)岳,千里ヶ浜から火口原の南部,南郷谷中央部にかけての斜面に位置し,南縁を白川が北西へ流れる。白川にほぼ並行して南阿蘇鉄道線,国道325号線が走る。集落は国道沿いに散在し,中心は阿蘇白川駅北方の吉田新町である。稲作を中心にタバコ栽培,肉牛飼育が行われる。東部の白川にある吉見神社境内の湧泉は白川の主水源として知られる。
