Italian Renaissance painter. His real name was Pietro Vannucci, but he was commonly known as Perugino, meaning Perugian. He was first influenced by Piero della Francesca, then studied in the studio of Verrocchio in Florence, where he developed his own style. By the end of the 15th century, he was based in Perugia and Florence, and was active throughout central Italy, fulfilling many commissions as a popular painter. His paintings are characterized by tranquil figures and landscapes influenced by Piero della Francesca and Flemish painting, simple and clear compositions that foreshadow High Renaissance painting, and the devout religious sentiment typical of a painter from Umbria. He produced a great number of murals, altarpieces and portraits, among which are the murals for the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, the decoration of the building of the Money Exchangers in Perugia, Apollo and Marsaeus and the Combat of Love and Purity in the Louvre, and the Portrait of Francesco delle Opere in the Uffizi. In his later years he lost popularity and lived in seclusion in Perugia. He also left his mark in art history as the teacher of Raphael.
