Aburasuki - Aburasuki

Japanese: アブラススキ - あぶらすすき
Aburasuki - Aburasuki

A rather large perennial plant of the grass family (APG classification: Poaceae). The culms are clumpy and 0.8-1.2 meters tall. The basal leaves have short stalks. In September and October, a 20-30 cm long cone-shaped inflorescence is produced at the top, with many drooping branches arranged in whorls. The spikelets are about 6 mm long. They form pairs on the inflorescence branches and contain two florets. The veins of the glumes are prominent, there are short tufts of hair at the base, and an awn emerges from the first glume. The Japanese name comes from the fact that it resembles Miscanthus sinensis but has an oily sheen. It grows in sunny hilly areas throughout Japan, and is distributed in Korea, China, and northern India.
