Senju

Japanese:
Senju

Located in the northeast of Tokyo's 23 wards, this area stretches from Arakawa Ward in the south to Adachi Ward in the north, with the Sumida River as the border. In the olden days it was written as Senju or Senju. The name is said to come from the Thousand-Armed Kannon of Shosen-ji Temple in Senju 2-chome, Adachi Ward, but there are also theories that it is the birthplace of Yoshimasa Ashikaga's concubine Senju-no-Mae, or that it was called Chiba-jumura because the Chiba clan lived there. Senju-juku, which flourished as the first post town on the Nikko Kaido (Oshu Kaido), spread from Senju in Adachi Ward across Senju Ohashi Bridge to Minamisenju in Arakawa Ward in 1661 (Kanbun 1). It is one of the four post towns of Edo. Even today, Kita-Senju Station is a hub for the JR Joban Line, Tobu Railway Isesaki Line, Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line, Hibiya Line, and Tsukuba Express, and the area around the station forms a central shopping district. Minami-Senju is known for Eko-in Temple, the site of the Kozukahara execution grounds, and Entsu-ji Temple, where the Kuromon Gate, formerly the main gate of Kan'ei-ji Temple in Ueno, stands. The site of the government-run Senju Carpet Works became Tokyo Stadium, but most of the site is now the Arakawa Sports Center.
