Born: December 17, 1847, Vendée, Roche-sur-Loyon [Died] June 7, 1916. Paris. French critic. Graduated from the École Normale Supérieure (Higher Normal School). Became a professor at the University of Paris in 1890. His lectures are compiled in Histoire de la poésie française de la renaissance au romantisme (Histoire de la poésie française de la renaissance au romantisme) (11 volumes, 1927-36). He also contributed to many newspapers and magazines, and wrote a theater review for Journal des Débats. He was a member of the Académie Française (1900). His main works include Politiques et moralistes du XIX e siècle (Political and Moralists of the 19th Century) (3 volumes, 1891-1900), Propos littéraires (Literary Theory) (02-09), and Le Feminisme (10).
