A unit of common currency used mainly in French-speaking African countries. CFA stands for Communaute financiere africaine. It is also called the African franc. It was originally the common currency of French colonies. Since January 1994, it has been guaranteed to be freely convertible at a fixed rate of 100 CFA francs to 1 French franc (1 CFA franc = 0.00152 euros due to the transition of the franc to the euro). The issuing banks are the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) and the Central Bank of Central African States (BEAC). Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and Guinea-Bissau are members.
