A general term for Muslims living in the Philippines. The name Moro was given by the Spaniards, as was the case with the Moors (→Berbers) of North Africa, and includes many ethnic groups with different languages. The four most prominent groups are the Taosug and Samar on Sulu Island, the Maranao and Maguindanao on Mindanao Island. They are Malay in character, and make up about 5% of the total population of the Philippines. They belong to the Sunni sect of Islam, and are connected to Muslims in other regions through a tradition of pilgrimage, but their customs are similar to those of Indonesia and Malay, as they are a mixture of traditional religions and are cut off from other Filipinos for religious reasons. They are divided into three classes, centered on the Sultan, and although the Sultan's political power has disappeared, his customary influence is strong. The Taosug make their living as traders and sailors, the Samar fishermen, and the Maranao and Maguindanao farm. The former are particularly famous for their bronze crafts.
