A type of mineral. Its chemical composition is MgO, but some Mg is replaced by Fe2 ⁺ . It has a cubic crystal system. It is mainly octahedral, usually rounded granular shape. It is colorless or off-white, but if it contains Fe it is yellow or yellowish brown. It is transparent and has a vitreous luster. Its Mohs hardness is 5.5. Its specific gravity is 3.56. Its streaks are white. It is formed by the thermal decomposition of dolomite CaMg( _CO3 ) ₂ during high-temperature contact metamorphism, so periclase occurs in recrystallized dolomitic limestone. However, it is a rare mineral in nature, as it easily changes to brucite or hydrous magnesium carbonate.

鉱物の一種。化学組成はMgOであるがMgはFe^2＋により一部置換されているものがある。等軸晶系。主として八面体，ふつう丸みをもった粒状。無色，灰白色，Feを含むものは黄色ないし黄褐色。透明，ガラス光沢。モース硬度5.5。比重3.56。条痕は白色。高温の接触変成作用によってドロマイトCaMg(CO₃)₂が熱分解して生成するので，ペリクレースは再結晶したドロマイト質石灰岩中に産する。しかし，容易にブルーサイトあるいは含水炭酸マグネシウムに変化するので，天然にはまれな鉱物である。
