1883‐1959 British popular novelist. His real name was Arthur Henry Ward. He created the mysterious character Fu Manchu, who embodied the fear of Asians associated with the Yellow Peril theory, and published a bestselling series of 13 books, including The Secrets of Doctor Fu Manchu (1913). As a child, he suffered from sleepwalking and is said to have even nearly killed his father, who was sleeping in the same bedroom.
