Earl of Leicester

A favorite of Elizabeth I of England. Fifth son of John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland (Earl of Warwick). He was sentenced to death by Mary I for supporting Jane Grey in the succession to the throne after the death of Edward VI, but was pardoned and entered Elizabeth's court, where he served as Lord Steward and Privy Councillor before becoming Earl of Leicester in 1564. His tall stature and good looks made him a favorite of the queen, and at one time there were rumors of his marriage. In 1565 he was sent to the Netherlands, but was recalled due to incompetence. On the other hand, he was known as a patron of the arts and literature, but his unprincipled relationship with women sometimes incurred the queen's intense anger.

イングランドのエリザベス１世の寵臣。ノーサンバーランド公ジョン・ダッドリー（ウォリック伯）の第５子。エドワード６世の死去の際の王位継承をめぐってジェーン・グレイを支持したために，メアリー１世から死刑を宣告されたが，許されてエリザベスの宮廷に入り，主馬頭，枢密院議員などを経て，1564年レスター伯となる。長身美貌で女王の寵臣となり，一時は結婚を噂されたこともあった。1565年ネーデルラントに派遣されたが，無能で召還された。他方，文芸の保護者として知られたが，女性関係に無節操で，女王の激しい怒りを買ったこともある。
