Derrick - Derrick (English spelling)

A cargo handling device used for loading and unloading cargo onto ships. It is a structure mainly consisting of an arm called a boom that is attached to the lower end of a pillar that stands upright on the upper deck, such as a derrick post or mast, with a freely rotating gooseneck and extends outward. The upper end of the boom is supported by a topping lift stretched from the top of the post or mast, and a boom guy and preventer guy attached to the side of the ship (bulwark). The direction and angle of the boom are adjusted by the tension of the topping lift and guy. A cargo fall extending from a cargo winch near the base of the post or mast is guided from the bottom end of the boom to the top and hangs down from the tip of the boom to attach the cargo. Cargo is moved by hoisting the cargo fall and rotating the boom in combination.

There are two methods for loading and unloading with a derrick. 船舶への貨物の積込みや揚荷作業に用いる荷役装置。デリックポストやマストなど上甲板に直立する柱の下端部に、自由に回転するグーズネックで取り付けて張り出したブームとよぶ腕木を主とする構造物である。ブームの上端は、ポストやマストの上部から張ったトッピングリフトと、舷側(げんそく)（ブルワーク）からのブームガイやプリベンターガイで支えられている。トッピングリフトとガイの張りぐあいでブームの向きと角度を調整する。ポスト、マストなどの根元近くのカーゴウィンチから伸びるカーゴフォールが、ブームの下端から上まで導かれてブームの先端から垂れ下がり、貨物を取り付ける。貨物の移動は、カーゴフォールの巻き上げとブームの回転を併用して行う。

　デリックによる荷役には二つの方式がある。〔1〕けんか巻き　二組みのデリックを、一基は船倉の直上に、一基は舷側の外まで張り出し、両方のカーゴフォールを同じ貨物に連結して調節しながら上下・水平に移動させて荷役を行う方式。〔2〕分銅巻き　カーゴフォールで貨物を上下に移動させながら、デリックをポストかマストを中心に回転させて荷役を行う方式で、一基のデリックだけで行う場合と、デリックの回転運動を支持するためにもう一基のデリックを併用する場合がある。
