A perennial plant of the Apocynaceae family. It is found on rocky coasts facing the Sea of Japan in southwestern Hokkaido and northern Honshu. The Japanese name is taken from the Ainu name for this plant. It is also known as Oshorosou because it is found around Oshiyorō Coast near Otaru in Hokkaido. It reaches a height of 40-80 cm and the entire plant is powdery white. The leaves are alternate on the main stem but opposite on the branches, oblong-ovate or elliptical, with round or obtuse tips and wide wedge-shaped bases on short stalks. They are 2-5 cm long and have sparse stiff projections on the edges.

キョウチクトウ科の多年草。北海道南西部，本州北部の日本海に面した海岸の岩場に見られる。和名はこの植物のアイヌ名からとる。北海道の小樽に近い忍路（おしよろ）海岸の周辺にあるので，オショロソウの別名がある。高さ40～80cmに達し，全株粉白色をおびる。葉は主茎では互生であるが，枝では対生して，長楕円状卵形または楕円形，先端は円形または鈍形，基部は広いくさび形で短柄がある。長さ2～5cm，ふちには硬突起を疎生する。
