Willibrord

Japanese: Willibrord
Willibrord

...It has been famous for its mineral springs since ancient Roman times. Willibrord (c. 658-739), who evangelized West Friesland, founded a Benedictine monastery here in 698. To commemorate Willibrord's cure of the plague, a dance procession has been held here every year since the Middle Ages on Whit Tuesday. ...

From [Christianity]

…Evangelism to the Germanic tribes began in the 3rd century, and in the 5th century to the Anglo-Saxons. In the 7th century, the Benedictine Order joined in and actively engaged in evangelism among other peoples. The activities of Willibrord (died 739) and Winfrid (died 754), who later became Bonifatius, are particularly well known. As a result, the Western Church became independent, free from the rule of Constantinople and the oppression of the Muslims, and was able to mediate ancient traditions into the Middle Ages. …

From the Bishop

...Bishops such as Donatus of Besançon, Mummolinus of Noyon, Germanus and Numerianus of Trier, and Lagunacarius of Basel were all such. In the 8th century, the Anglo-Saxons, namely Willibrord (658-739) and Boniface, took the place of the Irish in evangelizing Frisia and Germania, and their activities greatly improved the institutions of the Frankish Church, including the position of bishops. In particular, the Synod of 747, chaired by Boniface, clarified the system of the synod, the position of the metropolitan bishop, the duties of the bishop, and the division of duties between the metropolitan and diocesan synods, and also characterized for the first time the institutional relationship with the Pope.
