A plateau-like plain that continues to the eastern foot of the Rocky Mountains in North America. It extends to the border between Canada in the north and Mexico in the south. It is also translated as "Great Plains." The altitude is a maximum of 1,800 m at the western end, and gradually decreases to about 600 m to the eastern end, gradually transitioning into the American Central Plains. The border with the Central Plains is approximately 100° west longitude, which almost coincides with the line of 500 mm of annual precipitation. The natural vegetation is short grassland typical of a steppe climate, and forests are limited to riversides. It was once inhabited by Plains Indians who hunted buffalo, but after white settlement, especially after the Civil War, large-scale grazing land was established in various places.
