Total Peace Movement

Japanese: 全面講和運動 - ぜんめんこうわうんどう

A movement that took the position that when the peace treaty with Japan was to be concluded after World War II, it should be concluded with all of the warring nations in World War II, without siding with either the US or the Soviet camp. Since the end of 1949, the US, which had occupied Japan, had been preparing for a separate peace treaty with only the Western nations in the East-West Cold War structure. In response to this, the movement for a complete peace gained momentum, centered around intellectuals and progressives, and in January 1950, the Peace Issues Discussion Group published a "Statement on the Peace Issue," arguing that "Japan's destiny will only be opened up when Japan is committed to a spirit of peace and resolutely advances the path of independence and sovereignty," and that there was no other option than a complete peace.

第2次大戦後の対日講和条約の締結に際して，米ソ両陣営のいずれにもくみせずに，第2次大戦の交戦国のすべてと結ぶべきだとの立場をとった運動。1949年末ごろから，日本を占領していたアメリカは，東西の冷戦構造のなかで西側諸国だけとの単独講和の準備を進めていた。これに対して知識人，革新陣営を中心に全面講和運動が高まり，50年1月に平和問題談話会は〈講和問題についての声明〉を発表し，〈日本の運命は，日本が平和の精神に徹しつつ，而も毅然として自主独立の道を進む時にのみ開かれる〉として，全面講和以外にないと主張した。
