Modern horse racing is said to have had its origins in mounted combat, chariot racing, and hunting. It can be traced back as far as the chariot races described in Homer's Iliad, but it was in England that modern horse racing took its shape. Records indicate that in 1377, the Prince of Wales (later Richard II) and the Earl of Arundel raced their own horses near Newmarket.
